1. Factory Farm Workers Carry Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

It seems antibiotic-resistant bacteria hitch rides on hog farm employees, which concerns public health officials. A recent study reported in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine, found that 10 of the 22 workers at hog factory farms in North Caroline who were tested carried potentially deadly bacteria. The New York Times highlights this issue and states that “86 percent of the workers in the study carried the S. aureus bacteria, compared with about one-third of the population at large, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

Please visit Factory Farm Workers Carry Dangerous Bacteria.

Factory farming is contributing to the rise and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which puts the world at risk of an epidemic that we might not be able to stop. So, instead of sitting back and being witnesses of this problem, we should participate in the solution by not supporting animal agriculture and instead transitioning to a plant-based diet.

2. Famous Quote

“Compassion is ethical intelligence: it is the capacity to make connections and the consequent urge to act to relieve the suffering of others.”

~ Dr. Will Tuttle, The World Peace Diet

3. Cow’s Milk is for Calves

John Pierre, a nutrition and fitness expert, author, and specialist in increasing cognitive wellness in people of all ages, explains why dairy is not part of a healthy and balanced diet, especially in children. Cow’s milk contains natural and artificial hormones, as well as antibiotics, which have negative effects on human health.

To learn more please visit The Sour Facts About Milk: What Every Parent Needs to Know.

John Pierre says it right, cows are mammals and therefore produce milk for their young. "... a female cow secretes milk that is intended to nurse her baby calf for about one year. This fatty hormonal secretion (containing over 60 hormones and growth factors) is designed to take her 65 pound newborn calf and turn him into a 700-pound cow in less than one year — quite a feat!

Why then do humans continue to drink something not meant for them? The answers seems to be taste, profit, convenience and tradition. These are hardly good reasons for those who want to be good stewards of their bodies and of the rest of God’s Creation.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Isaiah 1:11, 15-16

What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of he-goats.
Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

Why not instead of sacrificing God’s animals for our taste, entertainment, etc. we choose to show compassion that benefits all of God’s Creation?

5. Smoked Meat Linked to Cancer

Doctors from India’s Government General Hospital announced at a scientific conference in Vancouver, Canada, that according to a recent analysis people who ate smoked meat were nine times more likely to develop cancer than people who did not. Previously, also the The National Cancer Institute in the USA has linked barbequed or grilled meat to cancer.

Please visit Smoked meat deadlier than liquor, may increase risk of cancer.

Cancer-causing agents are been found in cooked meat, and the link between cooked meats and certain cancers seems to be strong. On the other hand, plant-based foods contain phytochemicals, which are anti-cancer agents. So, eating a well-balanced, whole-foods, plant-based diet may cut down significantly our rates of cancer.

6. This Week’s Video - Antibiotics: Agribusinesses’ Pound of Flesh

Watch this video about the FDA’s suggestion that the meat industry voluntarily stop feeding antibiotics by the ton to farm animals to fatten them faster. A suggestion that of course falls short of the changes needed to forestall the epidemic of antibiotic resistance.
