1. Bird Flu in Europe

Cases of bird flu (H5N8) in birds have pushed European officials to adopt protective measures to prevent the spread of the virus that include the slaughtering of birds in infected areas and the ban on the sale of chicken products in those areas. The virus has been found in birds in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.

The extreme confinement of God’s animals raised for food has increased the chances of bacteria and virus to mutate and spread. The bird flu seems to be a virus of our own making; a consequence of exploiting God’s animals.

2. Famous Quote

“Elsewhere the paper notes that vegetarians and vegans (including athletes) 'meet and exceed requirements' for protein. And, to render the whole we-should-worry-about-getting-enough-protein-and-therefore-eat-meat idea even more useless, other data suggests that excess animal protein intake is linked with osteoporosis, kidney disease, calcium stones in the urinary tract, and some cancers. Despite some persistent confusion, it is clear that vegetarians and vegans tend to have more optimal protein consumption than omnivores. ”

~ Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Eating Animals

3. Bird Flu in Canada

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has placed two farms under quarantine after the confirmation of avian flu in British Columbia, Canada. This comes after the concerning news of bird flu found in Europe earlier this year. The CFIA says both farms are instructed to follow “enhanced biosecurity practices” in fear this virus could spread to other farms.

Read Avian flu found at two B.C. farms; thousands of turkeys, chickens killed.

What can be expected when we confine, torture and kill 60 billion land animals every year for human food?! Bird flu is one of the many consequences for humanity’s lack of compassion and justice toward God’s animals.

4. Bible Verses:
(RSV) Hebrews 12:1

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us,…"

We are called to follow God's will with faith and confidence, doing our best to avoid temptation. Focusing on Christ's teachings of compassion, mercy and love helps us live a life with purpose that honors all of God’s Creation.

5. Bird Flu in China

Europe, Canada and now China are facing outbreaks of bird flu. In Hong Kong, “health officials have slaughtered thousands of chickens from mainland China, closed one wholesale market and banned imports of live poultry after tests found some birds were infected with a strain of bird flu.”

Once again we are reminded that confining, mutilating and killing God’s farmed animals has grave consequences. It is clear that viruses and bacteria thrive and mutate in farms where animals are confined. So why is humanity taking the chance to suffer through a deadly epidemic when we can avoid it by simply showing compassion to these creatures and shifting out diet to a plant-based one? It is time to reexamine our priorities and core values.

6. Book Recommendation: Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching

This excellent book by renowned physician, Dr. Michael Greger, sheds light on one of the worst epidemics the world could face due to the spread of bird flu. He believes that the confinement of animals in factory farms are much to blame for bird flu.
