1. Eat More Tofu

This article onTimemagazine sets the record clear: yes, eat tofu. It turns out that 4 out the 5 experts the author consulted encourage the eating of tofu for its nutritional value and properties, which have been long known by many Asian countries that have been making tofu part of their meals on a regular basis. More specifically, this amazing food has been linked to lower rates of heart disease, certain cancers, and dementia.

Eating healthy plant-based foods help protect our health and the lives of countless animals who suffer unimaginably in factory farms and slaughterhouses. It’s a win-win situation!

2. This Week’s Famous Quote

When a human being kills an animal for food, he is neglecting his own hunger for justice. Man prays for mercy, but is unwilling to extend it to others. Why then should man expect mercy from God? It is unfair to expect something that you are not willing to give.
—Isaac Bashevis Singer, writer and Nobel laureate (1902–1991)

3. Illegal Antibiotics in Dairy

Not surprisingly, the FDA says that tests they conducted in cow’s milk samples indicate that some dairy farmers in the U.S. have been feeding cows illegal antibiotics, which raises the deep concern regarding the lack of oversight in dairy production and the dangers to public health.

Once again we learn that the dairy industry’s only concern is profit, and not at all the welfare of cows or public health. Should anyone then support this industry when it hurts animals, our health and the environment?

4. Your Health – Treating Your Body as God’s Temple

The apostle Paul wrote that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 6:19), and it follows that we should care for our bodies as gifts from God. The largest organization of food and nutrition professionals in the United States, the American Dietetic Association, notes that people with well-planned vegetarian and vegan diets have reduced risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and other conditions. (8) The Mayo Clinic Health Letter similarly promotes a plant-based diet. (9)

Be sure to supplement vitamin B12 on a plant-based diet. For other important plant-based nutrition information, see christianveg.org/nutrition.

5. Killing God’s Animals Is Killing Us

Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, commonly known as superbugs, are on the rise due to the overuse of antibiotics in livestock so they survive the crowded, unsanitary conditions in factory farms around the world. According to this article on Mother Jones, “a recent study predicted that antibiotic resistant infections will kill 10 million people a year by 2050.”

What goes around, may come around. In this case, exploiting God’s animals mercilessly for food is proving to be harmful to us in many ways. Will superbugs be a wake-up call so we stop abusing and eating God’s animals? Time will tell.
