Confirmed case of bird flu in England
On Saturday, the
European Commission confirmed the virus detected at a turkey farm in
England is the H5N1
strain of avian influenza; however, further test will determine if it is
the same strain as the Asian one.
It is believed that 2,000 birds had
already died of this virus before it was confirmed.
As a preventive measure 160,000 turkeys were slaughtered at the
Bernard Matthews farm.
Although authorities are reassuring the public
that it’s safe to consume poultry, the H5N1 strain can be transmitted to
humans and has killed more than 160 people worldwide since 2003, mostly
in Asia.
