High Levels of Mercury in Tuna

Tuna is the nation's second most popular seafood and its consumption is promoted by the government via school lunch programs, WIC (the federal food program for poor women and children), and even in the FDA and US Department of Agriculture dietary recommendations. Although it is known for being a low-carb food, high in protein, low in fat and rich in Omega-3s, it could very possibly contain alarming high levels of mercury, which are very detrimental to our health.

It is not necessary to eat tuna, or any fish, to eat a balanced diet. We can obtain all the nutrients, including Omega-3 fatty acids, from a plant-based diet. This way, we don’t cause intense suffering the aquatic creatures and we avoid the many contaminants (such as mercury) found in sea-food.
