Animal Rights Debate in the News
Representatives of Michigan State University's Students Promoting
Animal Rights attempted to arrange for a forum on campus that would have
put Dr. Jeff Armstrong, dean of the MSU College of Agriculture & Natural
Resources, and Bruce Friedrich, vice president of People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals in a discussion on the issue of animal rights.
Armstrong, who also serves as chairman of the United Egg Producers
Scientific Advisory Committee for Animal Welfare and as an adviser to
McDonald's on animal welfare issues, refused the debate on the basis it
would not be objective and science based.
The result was an interesting exchange of positions in The State
News: Animal activists encourage discussion (Bruce Friedrich's opinion)
and Civil discourse must be based in science (Jeffrey Armstrong's
opinion).
