Why Eat a Pig and Not a Dog?

It seems that as far as eating is concerned, most people live in a blissful ignorance. Just in the US, 10 billion land animals are slaughtered every year for food production. The great majority of these animals are raised in factory farms, knowing suffering everyday of their lives. On the other hand, Americans spend incredible amounts of money and time on their pets. Why the disconnection? What makes a farmed animal less sentient than a dog or a cat?

Hardness of heart and the rationalization of unethical actions keep people supporting the animal agriculture industry. As Christians, we should show compassion and love to all of God’s creatures, not just our pets. This is what good stewardship is all about.
