Genetically Modified Salmon?

Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began the process of approving genetically modified salmon, likely to be the first GM animal for human consumption in North America. The GM salmon grows twice as fast as wild salmon and could hit the supermarkets shelves within two to three years. This could also speed up the approval of GM cattle, bacon, dairy products and grains, which like GM salmon will be cheaper to produce and in much greater quantity. Many are the concerns about GM salmon, among which is the fact that it has a slightly elevated level of “insulin-like growth factor 1,” a hormone related to growth hormone that has been linked in some studies with higher cancer risk. One of the motivations to approve GM salmon is the decimation of aquatic fauna by the fishing industry.

The way we are devastating God’s Creation is appalling. God’s animals are being victimized by the billions every year, Earth’s resources are being depleted and humans are suffering the consequences. We are at the running point were we either wake-up and accept our calling with responsibility, being good stewards of God’s Creation, or we face humanity’s destruction.
