1. CVA Activism

Rick, who leafleted at Winter Jam in St. Louis, writes: I leafleted this concert at the Sr. Charles Family Arena in 15 degree weather during a hail storm and wind chill of 5 degrees. Fortunately, I was able to evade security and hand out 600 booklets to this large crowd of teens and pre-teens. Although everyone was friendly and polite, many would not accept a booklet from me because they didn’t want to take their hands out of their pockets. Indeed, even with gloves on, my fingers were barely working in the extreme conditions.

Ed. note: What fortitude! Great work, Rick!.

2. New Christian Vegetarian Support Group in Chicago

Robert Wayner (www.blackwalnutgallery.com) writes:

Our first meeting will be held at Black Walnut Gallery in the West Loop Fulton Market Gallery District on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 7pm. The gallery is located at 220 N. Aberdeen St, between Lake St. and Fulton Market. Aberdeen is two blocks east of Racine and six blocks west of Halsted St. If you are taking the "L," the nearest stop is the Green Line Ashland stop.

I will provide some veggie snacks. Feel free to bring some to share if you like, but the most important thing is that you just show up! Also, please forward this email to other Christian vegetarians you know. At the first meeting, we will simply talk with each other about why/how we came to be vegetarians and how it relates to our Christian faith.

Feel free to contact me at 312.286.2307 with any questions!

3. Letter to the Editor from Stephen Augustine

The New Year's moose rescue, featured on the front page of the Bee, was a laudable example of our community members expressing their compassion and empathy for an animal struggling for its life. It is sad that the moose saved with compassion will now be fair game for the next hunting season.

As the parent of a four year old - who adores all animals – it got me thinking about how children transition from animal lovers to become adults who treat animals most abysmally. Most early childhood children's books feature animals as the primary characters and young children just can't seem to have enough cute, fuzzy stuffed animals.

Somewhere between those childhood years and adulthood children are both hidden from the details of how we treat those cute, fuzzy animals and heavily indoctrinated to objectify animals. It's as if there is a deviance in the societal psyche that anthropomorphizes animals and at the same time allows us to do the most horrible things to them.

Children are raised with a completely conflicting and disconnected message about the food they are made to eat and the cute fuzzies that feature so prominently in their lives.

Health author Harvey Diamond once said, "Put a baby in a crib with an apple and a rabbit. If the baby eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, I'll buy you a new car." The Christmas message we proclaimed was "Peace on Earth". Will we ever get there if we continue deceiving our children and ourselves?
