1. A Comment on Last Week’s Letter to the Editor

Bob Muth’s letter received many positive responses, but one person disagreed with the claim that faith of most economists in deregulation and trickle-down economics “is broken.” Because re-printing his letter might give the impression that the CVA takes stands on economic policy, I want to stress that this is not the case. The reasons include the difficulty showing cause and effect in economics and also that many of the social justice issues raised by economic policies (i.e., who wins and who loses) are outside the purview of the CVA. I try to publish letters and commentaries that reflect a range of viewpoints, and sometimes those writings include material that does not represent CVA positions. We always welcome respectful, thoughtful replies.

2. Activist Feedback

Pamela, leafleting at Revolve Tour in Houston on 2/13, writes: Yesterday evening I handed out half of the booklets you sent. There were two other people handing out vegan literature. I will hold onto the rest of the literature and hand it out at a future event(s).

Lila, who had presentations at Hope Lutheran Church, writes: I had 2 meetings, showed the CVA video in the first one and had discussion on the second. Both went well, and all who attended were very glad they did. About 15 came to the first and 17 to the second. I am now contacting the Christus Collegium here by MSU in Bozeman to hand out more leaflets and show the video. I will start contacting the other churches as well, and I would like to get to the whole state of MT someday! Thank you again for all the leaflets.

3. Jack Norris, RD Web Site

From www.JackNorrisRD.com

A 15 year vegan recently wrote me concerned about whether a vegan diet was healthy during pregnancy. In her words, “Everything I have read says that getting the right nutrients is the most important thing you can do to ensure a healthy baby….Vegans (non-credentialed) are quick to tell me that everything will be fine…Non-vegans (Dr’s) are quick to tell me that my diet could be a problem.”

My (edited) response:

The most common nutrition concern is not having enough folate (or folic acid) at the time of conception and the first few weeks of pregnancy, but this is rarely a problem for vegans who normally get plenty of folate in their diet.

If you follow the guidelines here, you should be fine. I would especially recommend the article Pregnancy and the Vegan Diet by Reed Mangels that is linked from that page.
