1. Making a Difference in Washington, Part 1

Is Your Congressional Representative a Friend of Animals?

Members of Congress care about money and votes. You can make a big impression if you make clear that you care deeply about animal issues. Contact your Congressional representative to tell them that animal issues really matter to you and ask whether they are members of the newly formed Congressional Animal Protection Caucus. If they respond affirmatively, write again and thank them. If they say something like, “I have always opposed cruelty to animals” but sidestep your question, thank them for responding, then express appreciation that they share your concern for animals, and then ask if they plan to join the Caucus. I recommend contacting your representative by e-mail (letters to Congress are now virtually destroyed by radiation against anthrax) once a month to ask them to commit to animal protectionism by joining the Caucus until your representative either joins the Caucus or says they are not going to, in which case you should write one final e-mail to let them know that you and your many animal protectionist friends will be very disappointed.

To find your representative’s e-mail, go to www.congress.org.

Rick, leafleting for Vegan Outreach at a St. Louis area college, describes how he turned an antagonistic student into a sympathetic listener:

One student, Brian, was a bit antagonistic at first. He wanted to know why I was doing this. I replied that I was trying to ease suffering. He asked me if I felt that animals had the same rights as people. I said that I would not go that far, but that animals do suffer, feel pain, want to avoid suffering and pain and feel pleasure all similarly to the way we do.

During our conversation I had to excuse myself occasionally to leaflet other students passing by and thanked him for his patience when I returned. He commented about how many students were ignoring me and he said that I was annoying. I replied that they don’t treat their alumnae very well here. He seemed surprised that I was an alum.

I introduced myself and extended my hand to shake but he neither told me his name nor shook hands with me. He asked if I thought that chickens were stupid and I said no. He said that they run around after you cut their heads off. I said that that I did not think that was significant; some people’s eyes roll around after their heads are cut off. He asked me about pigs. I said that pigs were a good example of the suffering we inflict on animals and told him about gestation cages.

He asked what would we do with all the pigs. I said that we needed to do two things, provide them with better conditions and not raise them for meat. He agreed, at least, that we needed to treat them better. Before he left, he told me that he thought that I was doing God’s work. Later he returned and told me his name and extended his hand to shake.

As he left that time, he said he thought that Jesus would feel proud of me. I felt good at how I had turned around his antagonism and about what he said.

Carolyn, leafleting at Acquire the Fire in Minneapolis, writes: Ellen, Lauren, Danielle, and I began leafleting an hour before it began and handed out around 300 booklets. There were a lot of people going to the event, many of whom came in buses, so every time a bus would drop people off we would hand out leaflets to them.
