1. CVA’s Video Is Online

The 26-minute CVA Honoring God’s Creation, as well as the accompanying study guide, is now available at our web site at http://www.all-creatures.org/cva/cvavideo.htm.

2. Reflection on the Lectionary

Luke 24:36-48 (April 26)

[This is the first in what might be a weekly series of reflections, if people seem to find them helpful. I welcome feedback, positive and negative.]

This passage includes the story that describes Jesus eating fish after the Resurrection. Initially, Jesus made clear that he was raised in the flesh. He invited his disciples to touch him, and he said, “a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” For further proof, Jesus asked the disciples for some food. They offered a piece of broiled fish, and he ate it.

Does this prove that Jesus had little or no concern for animals? Some have noted that certain ancient biblical texts are ambiguous about whether or not Jesus actually ate fish. (See http://www.all-creatures.org/discuss/svtluke24.41-43-ajf.html .) Others have raised doubts about the historical validity of this account. (See, for example, Keith Akers, The Lost Religion of Jesus, pp. 127-9.)

If one takes this account as historically true, it indicates that Jesus was not a strict vegetarian. However, this story does not prove that Jesus had disregard for animals. Jesus did not request fish, and his eating the fish did not represented a triumph of his taste preferences over the needs of God’s creatures. To refuse the fish would have undermined his teaching that he was raised in the flesh, and evidently he regarded this teaching as sufficiently important to warrant eating flesh.

3. Activist Feedback

Kristi at Mercy Me Christian Rock in Fresno, CA, writes:

It was AWESOME! I stood in front of the convention center--on public property--and handed out leaflets to everybody in line. I didn’t get a single negative comment! I couldn't believe it! The majority of people willingly took a leaflet, thanked me, and read it in line. One lady high-fived me. Another lady came to talk to me because she's already a vegetarian. Security was standing a few feet away and didn't bother me. A few people handed back the leaflets and thanked me. Everyone was so polite! I didn't take any pictures because I was by myself. Keep in mind that I live right smack in the center of agribusiness, slaughterhouses, factory farms, LOL!

Part of the success of this, I believe, is that it's right on the heels of HBO's "Death on a Factory Farm." There has been so much exposure the past couple of years of the plight of farm animals in the media with many undercover investigations exposing the horrific cruelty. Here in California, Proposition 2 passed by an overwhelming majority.

I would love to do this again! I highly encourage everyone to give it a try. This was my maiden voyage. I prayed and prayed for God to protect me and help me help animals without getting hurt. I was so terrified my hands were shaking as I was handing out the leaflets and my heart was pounding! People were so nice that I started to relax. It was one of the best experiences I've had with vegetarian/vegan outreach. I feel so happy that I could get out there and help animals!

Since I was little, I have always believed that God's plan for me was to help animals. He has watched over me and inspired me every step of the way. A big THANK YOU to everyone who sent me e-mails of support!
