1. Activist Feedback

Rick, who leafleted at Winter Jam in St. Louis, writes: George and I leafleted to a crowd largely of receptive teenagers. Four young ladies came up to me to let me know that they were vegetarians. One young gentleman wanted to know if we were saying that they are sinners. I replied “No, I am not saying that. If I were to eat meat I would feel like it was a sin, but I am not telling others that they are sinners.” George handles these questions much better than I. I handed out 600 CVA booklets and 300 of Vegan Outreach’s Compassionate Choices; George handed out 225 CVA booklets.

2. Comment from a Member

Brett, commenting on Joe Stephen’s personal statement at http://www.all-creatures.org/cva/th-20080327-o.htm , writes:

"This article was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I have been feeling isolated in my church recently because of all the meaty meals members continue to eat, though I preached last year twice(!) on the importance of maintaining our "temples" through healthy eating, namely, vegetarianism. This helped, in subtle yet noticeable ways, but it remains common for my brothers and sisters to visit McDonald's or Steak and Shake when we go on outings together. I feel ostracized sometimes, but your article made me feel as though I separate myself. As your story commented, Jesus loves everyone, regardless of whether they have yet understood a plant-based diet it the best diet for the human body, and for the planet. He loves us unconditionally. I need to remind myself of it daily."

3. Reflection on the Lectionary

1 Corinthians 13:1-13.
January 31, 2010

This is the famous passage about love that is a frequent reading at weddings. I would like to point out that Paul recognizes that love is about actions more than feelings. He wrote, “Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful . . . it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right . . .” We often think that love describes strong feelings of affection, but I think that Paul understood that love without actions that reflect that love are empty. Consequently, many Christians see themselves as kind and compassion, and many even assert that they “love animals,” but our actions speak much louder than our words.
