Since we are in agreement about factory farming, we’ll pick up your following question.
All through the Bible, God says He wants obedience and not sacrifice, and the prophets echo this. The whole sacrificial system was a reluctant concession of God to limit the people’s hardness of heart, and remember that this was only to take place in the Tabernacle or later in the Temple, so relatively few animals were sacrificed according to the Law, but this all ended in 70 CE with the destruction of the Temple.
All through Biblical history, God has allowed people to suffer according to their evil ways, and just about every instance recorded is a reflection of this aspect of God’s judgement.
You are absolutely correct. Jesus corrects most of the false and cruel teachings of the Old Testament. He wants us to live in the heavenly will of God where there is no pain or suffering or mourning or death.
