Citation: HATS Category VIII: At approximately 1020 hours while reviewing the insensibility records I observed the following non-compliance. A bovine (under 30 month steer) required a double stun to render the animal unconscious. The animal was first shot with the 410, which did not render it unconscious, and then the plants immediate action was to shoot the animal again using the 410. The animal was rendered unconscious on the second shot. I found the bovine head and confirmed that it had been shot twice with the 410. I then discussed the issue with the HACCP Coordinator, and the plant Manager . and both informed me that the employee who performed the stunning on the bovine () would not be allowed to stun any animals using a firearm.
313.16(a)(1) The firearms shall be employed in the delivery of a bullet or projectile into the animal in accordance with this section so as to produce immediate unconsciousness in the animal by a single shot before it is shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut. The animal shall be shot in such a manner that they will be rendered unconscious with a minimum of excitement and discomfort.
