Citation: HATS CATEGORY IV - Handling During Ante Mortem Inspection. On 29 June 2010, at approximately 1225 hrs, while Dr. [redacted] was verifying HATs Category IV-Handling During Ante Mortem Inspection, the following noncompliance was observed: * Establishment employee [redacted] was observed, in an attempt to move a pig from the pens area to the stunning area, grabbing a pig that was moving in the opposite direction by its ears with his hands, lifting the forequarters of the pig off the ground, and turning the pig in the direction of the stunning area. [redacted] slaughter supervisor, was notified of the noncompliance immediately and he counseled the employee that he should not perform ante-mortem handling in this manner. No regulatory control action was taken as Dr. [redacted] was present when the employee was counseled and he was able to verify that the counseling was effective. The establishment is not in compliance with 9 CFR 313.2.

Regulation:

313.2(a) Driving of livestock from the unloading ramps to the holding pens and from the holding pens to the stunning area shall be done with a minimum of excitement and discomfort to the animals. Livestock shall not be forced to move faster than a normal walking speed.
