USDA Inspection Report: 15 Aug 2011

Code: 04C02
Violation: 313.2

Citation: On 8/15/11 at 0430 hrs. while performing ante-mortem inspection the following noncompliance was observed. There were approxametly 50 pigs in the back hallway behind the pens with no access to fresh water. All available pens that have water access were already filled with livestock. No regulatory control action was taken because at the same time I observed this noncompliance a plant employee was filling a tub with water to put in the hallway. MPI regulations 313.5(e) states "Animals shall have access to water in all holding pens and, if held longer than 24 hours, access to feed." This noncompliance failed to meet the requirements of MPI regulations 313.5(e). [redacted] and [redacted] were notified of my findings.

313.2(a) Driving of livestock from the unloading ramps to the holding pens and from the holding pens to the stunning area shall be done with a minimum of excitement and discomfort to the animals. Livestock shall not be forced to move faster than a normal walking speed.
