The computer system for the facility should be
updated to include two central servers that back up one another with
interconnection to the various desktop computers remotely located
throughout the facility. The following are some of the suggestions:
- 30 stations required
- Include laundry tracking and labeling system for residents’
clothing
There is also a requirement to upgrade the facility’s
telephone system. Our suggestion is to rewire both the computer and
telephone systems so as to have both category 3 and category 5 wiring
located in each wall terminal box. Such a configuration would allow for
maximum flexibility without the use of specialized computer wiring.
In addition to the central computer system, there
should be one or more on-line computers designated for resident use.
These computers should be located in a resident lounge or library.
The price of computers has been steadily declining.
From our personal experience, we believe the best option is to have
independent computers operating on a network with a central server and
complete backup.
The cost of the 30 network computers, 2 servers, and
2 independent computers would most likely not exceed an average of
$1,500.00 each including standard programs, or $51,000.00 total.
The cost of running category 3 and category 5 wiring
to each computer should be about $200.00 for each terminal, for a total
of $6,800.00.
The cost of a DSL modem, routers, and switches would
add several hundred dollars. We also recommend an allowance of about
$10,000.00 to cover the cost of scanners, printers, and other related
accessories.
This brings the total estimated cost to approximately
$70,000.00.
