Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility
2002 Feasibility Study: Report

Establish an Adult Home

One of the first aspects of the Montgomery Meadows operation that we noticed was that about 20% of the current residents could be moved to an Adult Home with an assisted living program or limited home health care program to accommodate residents classified as PA’s, PB’s, and CA’s. See the effect of having a facility of this type available to Montgomery Meadows in the Financial Analysis section of this report.

This program was discussed during our feasibility study meetings, and it was determined that there weren’t sufficient beds available in the County to accommodate these residents, particularly the dementia residents.

If the existing skilled nursing wings were replaced with larger and more modern wings to accommodate the needs of the residents, the vacated wings would become a natural setting for the establishment of an Adult Home as part of Montgomery Meadows.

Such a facility would:

  • Offer an alternative level of care to foster independence and help residents plan and meet rehabilitation goals

If one of the wings of the Adult Home was dedicated as a Dementia Unit it would:

  • Offer an enhanced environment to meet specific needs of dementia residents
  • Provide for safe wandering activity (interior and exterior)

At this point in our discussions we decided to meet with The Montgomery County Department of Social Services to get their opinion on Montgomery Meadows’ proposed establishment of an Adult Home. At the meeting were Robert L. Reidy, Commissioner, and Theresa Cranker, Long-term Care Coordinator.

The following paragraph was copied from the minutes of that meeting:

"In reference to the Adult Home, both Robert Reidy and Theresa Cranker indicated that there was a big need for dementia beds. With its existing "racetrack" corridor, a renovated (converted) nursing wing would work ideally for dementia residents. We questioned whether DSS thought there would be any problem filling 20-25 dementia beds. They thought there would be no problem. Based upon this confirmation, it is believed that a Montgomery Meadows Adult Home could support 80 beds. Theresa Cranker also indicated that some of the older, small adult homes may close because of inability to upgrade to State requirements. She did not know how many beds would be involved, but that it would definitely have a bearing on the projected Adult Home bed needs."

More recent admission surveys have indicated that it might be better to convert only two of the existing skilled nursing wings into Adult Home beds. This would down scale the total proposed Adult Home beds to 40-50.
