Montgomery Meadows Residential Health Care Facility
2002 Feasibility Study: Report

Physical Plant

B. Additions and Renovations Required for Operations and Programs

Resident Bathroom Changes

The following are suggestions for resident toilet/bathroom changes:

  • Construct a roll-in shower in each resident room.

This would increase resident privacy, dignity and efficiency of care, since staff time would not be necessary to transport residents to a centrally located bathing room.

  • Widen the bathroom to allow space for staff assistance between the toilet and the lavatory.

This would require a seven-foot wide bathroom, as compared to the present five-foot width.

This increased width would also provide a five-foot wheelchair turning radius, which does not exist in the present toilet rooms.

To accommodate this change would require a bedroom width of 13 feet on center, in order to maintain a five-foot wide vestibule.

  • Construct a storage area within the bathroom for bedpans.

  • Construct a lockable storage area in or immediately adjacent to the bathroom for the storage of towels and linens.

Such a change would eliminate staff time going between the bedroom and the central linen storage area, particularly when an additional item is needed while in the process of caring for a resident.

  • Install new medicine cabinets that are accessible to residents.

  • A wheelchair accessible molded lavatory vanity top would give residents sufficient space for their personal items.

See the discussion and room plans on the bathroom changes in Resident Bedroom Changes.
