Letters - By J. M. Gilheany

Breath of life for all Godís animals too

I'm not at all sure that the letter "Holy Spirit made us different from beasts" (Universe May 17) would square with Pope John Paul ll's General Audience of January 10, 1990, which reflected upon the "breath of life" imparted to human and animal beings alike in Genesis.

When the Holy Father declared that "animals also have a vital breath or wind and that they received it from God" there was jubilation from Catholic animal lovers throughout the world.

Perhaps protestants would have had less reason to sit-up.

For the Hebrew word for 'breath of life' or 'soul' - nephesh - is used throughout the Old Testament without distinction between man and our animal companions.

The Universe (31/5/09) .
