Letter from Debra Stitt to Spain's Ambassador to the US about Torturing a Bull for Saint John - 1 Jun 2007

Dear Ambassador,

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I'm writing you today. Truly, tears of despair stream down my face!

I have learned that every year between the 26th and 29th of June in Coria, Extremadura, a helpless bull is horribly tortured to death. Toros de Coria is said to be done in honor of St. John, whom I hardly believe would condone such a sadistic form of "entertainment" for the masses. Participating in and watching one of God's creatures endure such pain and fear should touch our souls at the deepest level, yet the crowds in Spain look on, participate in, and cheer for more.

Ambassador, I implore you to speak out to the church leaders in Spain and give them, and the politicians, the support they need to rise up against such cruelty. No where in the Old or New Testaments does God ever promote the torture of any creature -- human or otherwise. The leadership in Spain, along with the Church's silence and acquiescence about this event, is the primary reason it continues.

Please, look into your heart. Start talking to the people in Spain that can make a difference. Everything in life starts with one person with the courage to reach out. For every person you can touch, they in turn reach out to others.

I will never be able to erase the horrible pictures from my mind of that poor bull running in fear and pain from the onslaught of darts, only to fall prey to the knife when he lays down to rest.

I'm afraid that as long as this type of activity continues, I no longer feel I can support Spain with any of my consumer choices. I know I'm only one person, but when all is said and done, I need to be able to lay my head on my pillow at night and sleep with a clear conscience.

Please help . . .

Debra Stitt
