To The Editor:
Your
choice to picture the custom of kapparot (swinging a chicken around three times
overhead) as a front page picture on September 16 is, to me,
sad and misleading. It is misleading as most Jewish people neither
practice or believe in this ritual that is said to transfer one sins to the hen
as preparation for Yom Kippur. We believe that we must ask God to forgive
us for sins against God. We must speak directly to the people we have
wronged.
It is sad as this ritual involves cruelty to the animals. Being swung around is
terrifying to the birds who have been kept crated for several days
without food or water. Some of us belong to organizations including Jews
for Animal Rights and SERV (Society of Ethical and Religious
Vegetarians) who work to educate religious groups of all faiths about the
relationship of humane treatment of animals and the teaching of love compassion
and kindness that are at the core of all religious teachings.
