Letter to Poughkeepsie Journal about the Duck
On Monday January 28 you reported on a duck, shot by a hunter, found alive in
his freezer, who then received surgery followed by CPR to save her life. Is the
following the scenario? At first she was prey to be shot without any prior
knowledge or way to defend herself. Then, by virtue of not being killed by the
gun she becomes something akin to a pet (she received a name) or at least a
being whose life is worth saving. Is the message here than an animal's life is
worth nothing unless it survives the attempt to kill (murder) it? I wonder if
the one who shot her will now reconsider the taking of the life of animals? What
a conflicted message to give to children. We do not need the flesh of animals in
order to survive or to eat well. Let them live their lives in freedom as we take
such pride in living ours.
