Saving a Sheep and a Hawk
Voice of the People
New York Daily News
In the June 14 issue you detail the escape of a sheep from a slaughterhouse
with the "cutesy" headline, "Sheep flees Butcher and Bolts in South Bronx -
Wouldn't Ewe?". Then "A Wing and a Prayer" telling the immense effort to rescue
a baby hawk. Yet most of those who help in these efforts or at least applaud
them consume chicken, lamb and the flesh of other animals on a regular basis.
You printed a letter on the same day about Angelina Jolie saying that she works
to save tigers, yet enjoys steak. The message that a limited amount of selective
compassion exists for only some species (cats, dogs, exotics) or for a farmed
animal who becomes "a celebrity", should to be examined often. Ten billion cows,
sheep, lambs, chicken and turkeys are slaughtered each year in the United
States. Sixteen thousand six hundred and sixty six died while you were reading
this.
