Fall 2001 Issue
(part of a poem by Dennis Wayne Bressack
Woodstock, New York)
Reborn in this four-foot square cage,
fattened with antibiotics and hormones,
we holiday turkeys are a specialty breed,
bred for the seasonal slaughter,
a designated life expectancy
of chilling predictability,
severed below comb sacrificially,
defeathered, hung headless upside down.
blood drained into the vat below.
I live this pre-ordained existence,
reflecting on my plight
in sunless cramped quarters,
devoid of sanitation or sanity,
dreaming of wild turkeys
eluding weekend warriors
carrying guns or bows,
practicing for deer hunting season.
We turkeys are burdened with the distinction,
near designation as the national bird.
If Ben Franklin had had his way,
humans might be roasting eagles and
I might live to see another day.
"Please pass the cranberries and stuffing."
