Profile Zinnia Konviser has been a member of MHVS since its early days. She is also a rare breed: a born vegetarian. (MHVS's treasurer Ron Osborne is another born vegetarian.) Zinnia's parents owned Fannie Shaffer's Vegetarian Hotel. The wonderful vegetarian cooking that those of us who know her and have tasted her potluck offerings have marveled at, were no doubt learned during her early years. (You'll also find her simple but delicious recipe for vegan caviar in the Mid-Hudson Vegetarian Society's cook book.) Zinnia has recently retired from work with hotel caterers. Asked if she has ever tempted to eat meat during her lifetime, "Why should I be tempted to eat a cow?" she answered. Zinnia has two brothers, and both are vegetarian. All of her children are also vegetarian. Zinnia was married for 30 years and is now divorced. She is also active and a long-time board member of North American Vegetarian Society. "I never met a vegetable I didn't like," she insists. |
