NEWS BRIEF: Blames Hog Farms for Health Problems
Livestock
industry officials and the Bush Administration say there's no conclusive proof,
but some doctors nonetheless are blaming hog farms for some of their patients'
health problems, according to The New York Times. The article claims that a
growing number of scientists and public-health officials around the country have
traced a variety of health problems facing neighbors of large livestock farms to
concentrated animal waste.
Livestock
trade officials and government regulators say more study is needed before any
cause and effect can be proved. But, Kaye Kilburn, a University of Southern
California professor, who studies the effects of toxic chemicals on the brain,
says evidence strongly supports the link between the farms and the illnesses.
The EPA
had been planning to give large industrial livestock farms amnesty for
violations of the Clean Air Act and other environmental laws. This, despite the
fact that people who live near giant hog factories have been complaining for
years of neurological damage from hydrogen sulfide gas and other dangerous
pollutants produced by vast manure cesspools.
The Times
article notes that Iowa environmental officials have recently started conducting
hydrogen sulfide and ammonia air-quality tests at six neighborhood locations
around hog farms.
