In Memoriam: "Abby"
MHVS mourns the loss of Abby, a prize-winning pig rescued from
the Columbia County Fair last summer. She died over Easter weekend of a chronic
respiratory condition.
Abby is survived by her sister Anne, who was also rescued from
the fair and continues to live at a private sanctuary in East Chatham, NY.
Abby was raised by young Nick Keyser as a 4-H project for
"Columbia County Feeders,"
which prepares young teens for livestock farming.
4-H kids raise their animals, care for them, show them at the
fair, and then sell them for slaughter.
One of the pigs was originally named "Mrs.
Philly Cheesesteak."
Instead of going to the slaughterhouse the fate of other
animals exhibited at county fairs - Abby spent her days rooting in pastures,
playing and rolling in the mud.
Special thanks to Abbyıs caretakers, Deborah Dickman and Susan
Whissler, and to donors from Vegetarian Vision, Inc. and MHVS.
