The Primate Experimentation Scandal, 2005: An Investigative Report
By Michael A. Budkie, A.H.T., Executive Director,
SAEN
Emory University/Yerkes National Primate Research Center
The 2003 progress report for the Yerkes National Primate Research
Center, which is affiliated, with Emory University in Atlanta also
discusses social housing. The report states that the main station of
this facility houses 1270 primates and that 34% (up from only 27%) are
socially housed. The more appropriate way to look at this is that 66% of
these primates (838) are still in isolation housing.
At the Yerkes National Primate Research Center 94 primates, or 37.5%
of those who died of non-experimental causes died of gastro-intestinal
tract disease. This is a clear indication of stress, and it is
compounded by the deaths of 20 more primates to fights/trauma. This
would bring the death toll for stress related issues to 45% or 114.
