Reports University of California, San Francisco Internal records from the University of California (San Francisco) clearly show that primates at this facility are suffering from serious mental illnesses. Most often these pathological conditions are the direct result of highly invasive experiments performed at UCSF and/or social isolation. Several of the primates at UCSF have begun to injure themselves, biting and tearing at their own flesh or pulling out their hair. The stress from confinement and highly invasive experimentation has apparently taken a very serious toll on the primates at UCSF (see Appendix F). As this report is being written UCSF has just settled a case with the USDA regarding alleged violations of the Animal Welfare Act by paying a fine of $92,000, one of the largest fines ever levied by the USDA. UCSF had paid another fine just five years earlier. Among the charges against UCSF were depriving primates of water during experiments.
