Animal Rights Group Protests Neuroscience Convention

Kenny Goldberg

KPBS SAN DIEGO (2004-10-25) An animal rights group has released a report blasting medical researchers for mistreating primates in laboratory experiments. The group held a press conference at the Society for Neuroscience meeting at the San Diego Convention Center. KPBS Reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.

The group is called Stop Animal Exploitation Now. Spokesman Michael Budkie says neuroscience research is especially rough on primates. He says some of the practices are barbaric.

Rhesus monkeys are confined to restraint chairs. Recording cylinders are literally bolted into their skulls, electrodes are fed into their brain.

But Dr. Evan Snyder of San Diego's Burnham Institute, says researchers treat animals with respect.

The care and compassion that's accorded every single experimental animal is extreme.

Michael Budkie disagrees, and says U.S. labs frequently violate federal regulations for primate care. He says labs should open their doors to greater public scrutiny. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
