Stop Animal
Exploitation NOW!
Media Coverage An animal rights group accuses the UW of getting hundreds of millions of our tax dollars for useless research April 24th, 2005 Michael Budkie, Executive Director of Stop Animal Exploitation Now,
says part of the reason for the federal government's deficit is because
it's wasting billions of dollars a year on useless and redundant animal
experiments. Budkie claims animal experimentation is not about science,
it's about money. Budkie says right now, the federal government is spending over
12-billion dollars a year on animal experimentation. He says the UW is
getting about 177-million annually while regularly breaking the federal
animal welfare act. Budkie points to the Wisconsin Primate Research
Center. Eric Sandgren, with the Animal Care Committee at the UW, says animal
research is only done as a last resort. Also, he says, redundancy is the
nature of science. Budkie says right now, the federal government is spending over
12-billion dollars a year on animal experimentation. Budkie says Michelle Basso's experiment exemplifies the worst in
redundant research at the UW. He says it's probably the most duplicated
kind of animal experimentation anywhere in the US. Eric Sandgren, Chair of the all campus Animal Care Committee at the
UW, says animal research is only done as a last resort. Animal rights
groups accuse the school of doing animal research for the sake of
getting millions of federal dollars. Sandgren says if that was the case
-- they would not use animals because that can be more expensive than
other types of research. Sandgren explains, if they need to answer a significant question that
only can be answered using animals, they'll receive the funding. Also,
he says, whether it's animal research or other types of research, they
try to avoid redundancy. Michael Budkie, Executive Director of Stop Animal Exploitation Now,
says too many taxpayer dollars are wasted on too many redundant animal
experiments. Sandgren says society decides whether animal research is necessary.
