Media Coverage Animal Rights Group Criticizes Primate Research Center POSTED: 4:55 pm PDT July 13, 2005 DAVIS, Calif. -- Animal rights activists are once again setting their
sights on the Primate Research Center at the University of California,
Davis. The group Stop Animal Exploitation Now released results Wednesday of
its yearlong investigation. The group's director, Michael Budkie, claims
that the staff at the Primate Research Center is guilty of negligence and
lying about primate deaths on federal documents. "The primates inside this laboratory are so sick, stressed and
debilitated that they're suffering needlessly, and that the research here
is essentially useless. And $81 million of federal tax grants are being
wasted here every year," Budkie said. "We have the best animal care here," said center spokesman John
Capitanio. "We have inspections that are done regularly and unannounced by
accrediting agencies and the Department of Agriculture, who oversees
animal welfare in the United States." The same animal rights group protested outside the research center last
August.
