Media Coverage Dozen protest UNR over alleged animal abuse
Staff Report RENO GAZETTE-JOURNAL Alleged mistreatment of research animals at the University of Nevada,
Reno and a research watchdog group naming the school’s animal facility
the nation’s worst prompted a dozen people to demonstrate outside campus
Saturday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently found violations at UNR
that included seven incidents of depriving animals of water, three
incidents of animals being deprived of food or fed in an unsanitary way,
three citations for inadequate veterinary care and six in which the
university’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee failed to
enforce the Animal Welfare Act. UNR was fined $11,400. No university officials attended the demonstration, but Provost John
