Primates' use in research comes under fire in a report by animal rights activists
San Jose Mercury News
Posted on Wed, Oct. 19, 2005
Animal rights activists released a report on Tuesday critical of the
use of primates in research at Stanford University and other campuses,
urging closer oversight by officials to prevent unnecessary and
duplicate experimentation.
The Ohio-based group Stop Animal Exploitation Now (SAEN), working
with the Stanford student group Animal Rights on the Farm, targeted work
by Stanford neurobiologist William Newsome, who uses rhesus monkeys to
study brain function.
The activists are particularly critical of the use of head-restraint
devices and surgeries on monkeys in research that studies perception.
Stanford defends the research, saying scientists only use animals
when absolutely necessary and work to minimize their suffering.
According to a statement from the Stanford University Medical Center's
committee on ethics, ``We support the conduct of biomedical research in
order to help us understand the world in which we live and to apply this
knowledge to the benefit of humans and animals.''
The report, entitled "The Primate Experimentation Scandal, 2005,''
also decries experiments at the University of California-San Francisco,
the University of California-Davis and several other leading
universities.
``If all we did was to eliminate duplication of work, we would save
millions of dollars and thousands of animals' lives,'' said Michael
Budkie of SAEN.
