Animal Rights Group Protesting

Posted: April 21, 2008 05:51 PM EDT

A national watchdog group and local activists say animal cruelty in research laboratories is on the rise.

Monday students promoting animal rights at Michigan State University say that say over the past five years there's been a 90% increase in lab crimes.

The group sites a federal inspection report that says in 2006 a puppy fell down a floor drainage hole and died in a MSU laboratory.

Last year, 66 mink died of heat stress on campus after MSU failed to provide proper shelter for the animals.

Mitch Goldsmith, Students Promoting Animal Rights: "These deaths of 67 animals received no punishment for anyone on campus, and also received no fines, so we're just showing the injustice behind that."

Six news spoke to MSU officials about the report, who say they were issued warnings in the accidental deaths and have sense made changes to make sure they don't happen again.
