An animal rights group says Loyola's medical school labs mistreated rabbits and dogs used in research. The group bases its criticism on U.S. Department of Agriculture inspections. Stop Animal Exploitation Now director Micheal Budkie says he's gathering inspection reports for every lab in the U.S. that uses research animals. But Loyola stands out.

BUDKIE: From what we've seen so far, the number of violations and the severity of those violations mark them as probably the worst laboratory in Illinois and potentially one of the worst in the United States.

USDA inspections found a number of problems at the facility over the past two years. Loyola says it has addressed those concerns and is committed to treating animals humanely. A USDA spokesperson says Loyola's latest inspection this past May found no problems at the lab.
