NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A baby monkey was found dead in a washing machine, and several hamsters were given chemicals that killed them. Vanderbilt University was ordered to pay a hefty fine.

A USDA investigation uncovered startling information about how animals were treated in the school's research lab.

In 2008, the USDA slapped Vanderbilt University with charges after an infant Galago Monkey was found dead in the washing machine. The nesting boxes had been washed, but the lab failed to make sure animals were removed first.

Months later, also in 2008, the University was cited again. This time because five hamsters were euthanized or killed when the wrong chemicals were administered.

Michael Budkie, Executive Director the animal welfare group SAEN said: "If Vanderbilt staff can't even clean nesting boxes without killing animals, then something is seriously wrong. How can any of the research results from this facility be given any credence whatsoever?"

Vanderbilt University Spokesperson John Howser responded by saying, "Vanderbilt University is firmly committed to...the most humane protocols for all animals. The incidents in the recent USDA settlement agreement were self-reported by Vanderbilt University to the USDA, and.. corrective actions... have been taken."

In July, Vanderbilt agreed to settle out of court and paid an eight thousand dollar fine to the USDA.

The group SAEN also said Vanderbilt was again cited in 2009 after a dog with an incision from abdominal surgery was picked up by the skin of the back for transfer into a cage.
