Santa Cruz Biotech investigated for testing on goats

From KSBW.com, Tuesday, September 18, 2012

The United States Department of Agriculture filed a major complaint against Santa Cruz Biotech for violating the federal Animal Welfare Act while testing on goats from 2007-2012.

The international company based in Santa Cruz uses goats and rabbits for testing to develop antibodies and animal health care products. Animals are constantly kept sick for testing and research.

Inspectors found 20 violations at Santa Cruz Biotech and the company could face a $200,000 fine.

“We are very pleased that the USDA is moving forward with a major case against Santa Cruz Biotech,” said Michael A. Budkie, executive director of Stop Animal Exploitation Now. “This facility deserves the largest fine possible under the Animal Welfare Act.”

"They've been seriously abusing animals in violation of federal law for at least five years and it's high time the USDA did something about that," Budkie said.

A spokesman for Santa Cruz Biotech declined to comment.
