USDA fines Fort Collins lab where 3 dogs died in custody

By Madeline Novey, Coloradoan.com, Tuesday, June 4, 2013

A Fort Collins company that conducts medical experiments on animals was fined following a federal inspection prompted by the death of three dogs held in its custody.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture fined Care Research LLC $679 in March for several alleged violations of the Animal Welfare Act. An unannounced inspection in December 2011 resulted in findings that three beagles died in May 2011, two days after an automatic watering system was found malfunctioning for an unknown amount of time.

The USDA inspection also found a Care Research director, not the dogs’ veterinarian, allegedly conducted the postmortem exams.

It isn’t known how the dogs, released from a research study a week prior, died, Care Research’s Rajan Bawa said in an email to the Coloradoan. Effects observed weren’t explainable by dehydration or water deprivation, he told the paper previously.

Bawa said Care Research complied fully with the USDA’s investigation.
