"Exposing the truth to wipe
out animal experimentation"

Animal rights group says UW researcher misleading the public
by Doug Cunningham
This media coverage was from the Wisconsin
Radio Network. This network supplies stories to approximately 60
radio news stations in Wisconsin.
An animal rights groups accuses the director of
UW's Primate Research Center of misleading the public in order to
draw millions of dollars into the center. Michael Budkie heads up
the Ohio-based Stop Animal Exploitation Now. He says the UW's Joseph
Kemnitz claims a shortage of rhesus monkeys in order to get more
funding for the primate research center. Budkie says there's no
shortage and the public needs to see what's really going on at the
research center. "We believe that if these facilities are going to
get another dime of our money we have a right to see what's going on
inside," Budkie said. Budkie says there are troubling questions
about the research primates are subjected to and whether it's really
necessary. "They have made it sound like, oh the research that goes
on in these facilities is worthwhile, the animals are well taken
care of. Essentially, everything is fine," Budkie said, "From every
piece of information we've been able to come up with this is
anything but the case. The animals in many of these laboratories are
suffering tremendously from stress. There's been an ongoing problem
at the primate research center there in Wisconsin with cannibalism
among the primates."
