ANIMAL RESEARCH
IS CRITICIZED
AS EXPENSIVE AND REPETITIVE
Date: Saturday, April 27, 2002
Section: LOCAL/WISCONSIN Edition: ALL Page: B3 Byline: Beth Williams
A Cincinnati-based animal
rights group released a report Friday in Madison that criticizes animal
research as expensive and repetitive. "Even if you think animal
experimentation is worthwhile ... you don't have to have the same
research done over 100 times," said
Michael
Budkie, executive director
of Stop Animal Exploitation Now and author of the audit of animal
experimentation projects that receive money from the National Institutes
of Health.
According to the audit,
UW-Madison receives $103 million from institutes for research with
animals. UW-Madison spokesman Terry Devitt could not confirm that
number and said the report, which is part of World Laboratory Animal
Liberation Week, is not trustworthy. "Basically this is a common
complaint that has no basis in fact," Devitt said. "Research is not
replicated unless there is a very good reason for doing so. Part of the
scientific method is replicating research." SAEN is asking Congress to
commission a General Accounting Office audit of NIH grants to avoid
duplicate research.
