Stop Animal
Exploitation NOW!
Newsletters From the Desk of Michael Budkie, SAEN’s Executive Director At times so much needs to be said, that finding a place to start is
difficult. As I look back at our work since the last newsletter and over
SAEN’s first ten years, I am struck with both the magnitude of our
efforts and the immenseness of the battle in which we are engaged. This
issue of The Defender is packed with so much information that it may
burst at the seams, having grown now to 14 pages. In SAEN’s last six months or so, the projects undertaken, the
laboratories targeted, the animals fought for, and the battles won have
spread across the length and breadth of the U.S. Our tireless efforts
have brought to light violations of federal laws, seen labs fined,
prevented the deaths of primates within at least one lab, and exposed
abusive laboratories in California, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin,
Nevada, Florida, Texas, Missouri, and many other states,. Since the use of animals in experimentation as a whole is an immense
issue, it is sometimes helpful to examine the plight of individual
animals or specific laboratories to provide more depth and clarity. Yet
at other times, we need to step back to see the larger picture by
examining entire agencies within our government. This issue of The
Defender uses all of these approaches to give you the fullest possible
picture of animal experimentation today: >Insider information about the animals that suffer in Department
of Defense labs; leading to the exposure of the most painful lab in
the U.S. >First time ever, shocking data on the 50,000 animals suffering
in labs owned by the USDA, the supposed protector of animals, and why
most of these animals are excluded from any legal protection
whatsoever >Find out which U.S. lab breaks the law most often >Learn which labs paid paltry fines, while amassing millions of
dollars for “research” >Meet Karen (a chimpanzee imprisoned within the New Iberia
Research Center) and Cornelius (a rhesus monkey incarcerated at the
University of Connecticut) Additionally, a new section, Vegetarian Recipes, will be featured to
help SAEN supporters live a longer, healthier, and more compassionate
life. If we are to continue our fight for animals, we must all remain
healthy and active. Hope you will enjoy these recipes as much as we do.
The very government agencies chosen to protect the animals within
labs have abdicated their responsibilities, so their protection is left
to us. This is why SAEN came into existence ten years ago this year --
to fight for animal liberation until the suffering ends and the cages
are empty. We will expose the barbaric practices of these labs to the
light of day and will make certain to keep the pressure on until our
goals are achieved. Some might expect us to commemorate our tenth
anniversary with memorabilia or galas, but we cannot celebrate when so
much remains to be done for the animals who are still suffering. We must
continue to focus our energies and resources towards concrete efforts
and an ultimate victory for the animals – that is when we will
celebrate. Have we been successful in our work? -- more than I could have
ever dreamed. During 2005, SAEN reached millions of people with more
than 50 different pieces of media coverage on the animal experimentation
issue, bringing our 3-year total to more than 100. We have done more to
expose cruel and abusive laboratories than anyone else. This year we
directly saved the lives of primates inside a Florida lab. SAEN is
fighting for these innocent victims and winning! I am sincerely grateful for your prior gifts which allowed us to
achieve so much for the animals. What will we accomplish in coming
years? Only you can make this decision. Please continue to give
generously so that we can target even more adversaries. Your donation of $25, $50, or $100 will help us to fight for
millions of imprisoned and suffering animals. Larger gifts of $250,
$500, or $1000 will help us to take on crucial new campaigns like the
Air Force Research Laboratory. Your ongoing financial support will make
it possible for us to keep fighting the cruelty and abuse that is
intrinsic to every animal experiment. Thank you in advance for your
gift.
