Newsletters National Primate Liberation Week 2005 – the Largest One Ever!!
National Primate Liberation Week (NPLW) 2005 was even larger and more
successful than the previous year’s event with participation in more
than 21 cities covering 17 states and Australia. This is the first time
that NPLW has gone international! National Primate Liberation Week 2005 events took place in Birmingham
(AL), Tempe (AZ), Chapel Hill (NC), San Diego, Davis, San Jose, Los
Angeles, & San Francisco (CA), Storrs (CT) , Gainesville (FL), St. Louis
(MO), Baltimore (MD), Southboro/Boston (MA), St. Louis (MO), Columbus
(OH), Portland (OR), Houston, Dallas, & San Antonio (TX), and Seattle
(WA). A National Primate Liberation Week event was also coordinated by
the Queensland Group for Animal Rights in Queensland, Australia. During NPLW 2005, we released our newest investigative report: The
Primate Experimentation Scandal 2005. This landmark report revealed that
over 120,000 primates suffer in U.S. labs and animal dealers costing
$1.6 billion annually. The number of primate grants funded by the
National Institutes of Health has risen 67% in the last ten years. The
funding of the Primate Research Center System has risen 379% in the last
six years to eclipse the $1 billion mark. This report also exposes substantial abuses of primates at: Emory,
Harvard, New Iberia Research Center, Oregon University of Health
Sciences, University of California -- San Francisco, Los Angeles, &
Davis, University of Washington (Seattle), and University of Wisconsin
(Madison). Media coverage of NPLW was substantial and widespread. Examples from
many cities including: Los Angeles, Houston, and San Jose are in the
media coverage section of our website at
www.saenonline.org . For this week long event Michael Budkie, SAEN’s Executive Director,
traveled to San Antonio, San Jose, San Diego, St. Louis, and Davis (CA)
to work with local groups to expose primate experimentation.
