SAEN UPDATE -- Violations at MPI Research Escalate
Last year SAEN blew the whistle on MPI Research of Mattawan (MI),
after receiving insider tips. SAEN’s inquiries have uncovered further
Animal Welfare Act violations at MPI. The cruelty and negligence
perpetrated on dogs, primates, and other species at this facility are
simply horrendous.
According to federal reports, one MPI project used a chemical known
to have caused abnormal hair pulling and stereotypical behaviors.
However, the principle investigator attempted to hide these side-effects
from the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee, preventing the
committee from making an informed decision about this protocol.
Another incident recounted in the report focused on a dog which was
allowed to suffer substantial pain and distress without being humanely
euthanized. The report states:
“An animal welfare concern report was reviewed involving a dog that
was documented as ‘was non-responsive, breathing agonal, material in pan
red’ at 11:13 am. This animal was documented as dying at 12:02 pm during
preparation for necropsy. This animal did not receive euthanasia to
relieve its pain and suffering in a timely manner.”
These violations reveal a continuing and utter disregard for the pain
and suffering endured by animals at MPI.
