Press Releases Johns Hopkins repeatedly breaks federal laws, watchdog group will claim Sunday FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins University receives more than a quarter of
a billion dollars a year for research, but yet breaks federal laws in
its labs more than virtually any other facility in the nation, according
to an independent taxpayer audit of the university to be disclosed
Sunday here. That report will be released at a news conference at JHU Bayview
Medical Center (4940 Eastern Ave.) at 12:30 p.m. SUNDAY (April 17) by a
national research watchdog organization. Animal rights activists – backed by the report – have scheduled a
demonstration at the same time Sunday as part of World Laboratory Animal
Liberation Week, a series of actions in hundreds of U.S. cities
protesting the use of animals in laboratories. The Cincinnati-based SAEN, a non-profit research watchdog
organization, says its audit will list the names of the “Top 40" U.S.
research facilities which receive the most research dollars – but yet
break federal laws the most often. Johns Hopkins collects about $254 million annually (fourth in the
nation) for research, but has broken federal laws at least 31 times
(sixth in the nation) over the past three years, according to SAEN
research director Michael Budkie, who be at JHU Sunday. The audit also reveals that despite the billions in funding, the
research results at JHU and other facilities are tainted with redundant
and wasteful research, and massive violations of federal law which can
often invalidate the research itself. "It's shocking that labs across the nation which receive billions in
federal tax dollars are allowed to continually break federal law with
impunity,” said Budkie. “Our studies indicate that these research
facilities can’t even keep the cages clean, and that they continually
break the law.” A copy of the audit/report will be released at the news briefing
