Despite banking billions of dollars, U.S. research labs break federal law, may invalidate critical research, says watchdog organization FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BETHESDA – The largest U.S. research laboratories receive billions of
dollars in federal funding – but yet break the most federal laws in the
spending of it, according to an independent taxpayer audit to be
released by a national watchdog organization here Monday at a news
conference. The advocacy group will hold the news briefing MONDAY (April 18) at
10 a.m. at the entrance to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 9000
Rockville Pike to release a “White Paper” documenting the findings of
the audit. The audit will list the names of the “Top 50" U.S. research
facilities which receive the most research dollars, and reveal that the
research results are tainted with redundant and wasteful taxpayer-funded
projects, and violations of federal law which can often invalidate the
research itself. "It's shocking that labs across the nation which receive billions in
federal tax dollars are allowed to continually break federal law with
impunity,” said Michael Budkie, who will preside over the news
conference. Budkie is the research director with SAEN, a
Cincinnati-based non-profit. “Our studies indicate that these research facilities can’t even keep
the cages clean, and that they continually break the law, despite
billions in U.S. tax dollars,” said Budkie, whose report will list the
major law breakers in the U.S. Full results of the study will be released at the news briefing
Monday. -30-
