Press Releases Bloody, insider photos from University of Houston will be released Wednesday; $2 million 'torture' chair used in UH labs URGENT NEWS ADVISORY - Wednesday News Conference Wednesday, October 19,
2005 Contact: ATTN: DAYBOOK/NEWS DESK HOUSTON: Rarely seen bloody photographs leaked from INSIDE animal
research laboratories at the University of Houston will be made public for
the first time at a major news conference WEDNESDAY, 2 p.m. at the J.
Davis Armistead Optometry School on the UH Main Campus. The graphic photos ? which are being released simultaneously around the
country by those opposing animal research ? represent a "restraint" chair
used for more than $2 million in animal experiments at the UH optometry
school. Following the news conference Wednesday, activists with In Solidarity
with Animals will hold a vigil at the optometry school, which coincides
with similar demonstrations around the nation as part of "National Primate
Liberation Week." "We're going to show the world what the University of Houston and
vivisectors don't want the world to see. If a photograph is worth a
thousands words, these photographs speak for the more than 55,000 primates
lamenting in research labs across the country," said Melissa Stringfellow
of In Solidarity with Animals. "These photographs of instruments of torture speak of unmitigated
physical and emotional pain. What do they say about the way we treat
'mankind's closest genetic relatives,'" added Stringfellow. The photos are also part of an investigative report released this week
by a non-profit research watchdog organization linking testing failures of
Vioxx and other similar drug scandals to extreme stress caused research
primates, resulting in fraudulent, taxpayer-funded research at
laboratories across the nation. -30-
