Press Releases Leaked Documents Reveal Abuses Inside UW Labs; Internet Site to Disclose Location of UW Labs For Immediate Release Madison, WI - A national research watchdog organization said today it
will make public on its website leaked federal documents, which expose
both substantial abuses within University of Wisconsin, Madison
laboratories as well as revealing locations of more than 30 UW
laboratories. "The public has a right to know the truth about federally-funded labs
like the UW," said Michael A. Budkie, AH.T., SAEN's Executive Director.
"The abuse perpetrated on animals using federal tax dollars must be
exposed." Internal government reports have been leaked to SAEN which detail UW
experimental procedures. These documents show that more than 2200 animals
inside UW facilities are exposed to abusive procedures every year. UW experimental procedures include long-term food and/or water
deprivation, long-term restraint, isolation housing, lack of proper
sanitation, etc. In one particularly abusive experiment it appears that 70
cats and 8 rhesus monkeys are deprived of water for 18 hours per day/6
days per week and restrained for more than 6 hours per day. "Abusive experiments at the UW are out of control," said Budkie. "Supervisory officials are apparently allowing 'researchers' to perform
virtually any experiment they desire." The leaked federal documents also contain locations for over 30
university labs which will be posted to the SAEN website. "The people of
the United States have a right to know how their federal tax dollars are
being spent, and where," added Budkie. "This is a state university which
should allow access to citizens of Wisconsin." The UW documents are posted at: -30-
